SAFC’S official book, ‘Sunderland Cult Heroes’ features some of the most popular players to play for the Lads. It is not necessarily a book of the best players ever to play for Sunderland but the ones the crowd have taken to. Full back Chris Makin was always known as ‘Shoot’ and explains how far it went: “Every time I got the ball they’d all yell ‘Shoot!’ at me. It got a bit embarrassing in the end because I’d get the ball in my own half and they’d still be shouting ‘Shoot!’ There was one occasion I was coming out of a supermarket, and there was a band playing outside the front entrance raising money for charity. They saw me, stopped playing and all got up and shouted ‘Shoot!’ It was embarrassing but it was a good laugh.”
Along with Chris fellow full backs John Kay, Joe Bolton and Dick Malone are also included as are 1973 FA Cup final centre forward Vic Halom, midfield maestros Kevin Arnott and Julio Arca, goalkeepers Barry Siddall and LR Roose and present day star Nyron Nosworthy.
In hardback at £16.99, Sunderland Cult Heroes is available from all club shops and online at safc.com
